Great American Cleanup of PA is March 1 through May 31

Did you know the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania takes place March 1 through May 31?

This is the time when Pennsylvanians comes together to participate in efforts to clean up the Commonwealth, as folks from across the country make the effort on the national scale for the Great American Cleanup!

Citizens form volunteer groups and clean up neighborhoods, parks, roadsides, streams, beaches, forests, and much more. Others collect items that can be difficult to dispose of, such as tires and appliances, or they help develop green spaces with community gardens or saplings, or they may organize educational outreach events. It’s a time for everyone to get involved in sprucing up their communities and be actively engaged by the process.

According to the Great American Cleanup of PA, in 2018 there were 5,362 events organized during the Great American Cleanup that brought together 108,638 volunteers who helped clear 6,632,920 pounds of trash and 19,753 tires from along 8,915 miles of roads, shores and trails. In addition, 10,979 trees, shrubs and flowers were planted, and 1,107,164 pounds of materials were recycled.

This equates to a $55 return in community benefit for each $1 invested by the state, according to Great American Cleanup of PA.  Talk about a return on investment!

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful partners with PennDOT, the Department of Environmental Protection and Keep America Beautiful to provide free trash bags, gloves and safety vests to registered participants, as supplies last.
